How We Treat Sciatica

Most sciatica improves without surgery. Our physicians build a plan around your diagnosis, starting conservative and stepping up only as needed.

Epidural Steroid Injections

Image-guided injections calm the inflamed nerve root — often the fastest path to real relief when radiating leg pain won’t settle.

Targeted Nerve Blocks

Diagnostic and therapeutic blocks confirm exactly which nerve is generating your pain and quiet it directly.

Hands-On Therapy

Skilled physical therapy and chiropractic care restore movement and take pressure off the sciatic nerve.

Advanced Options

For persistent cases: radiofrequency ablation and spinal cord stimulation — performed at our on-site procedure suite.

Is It Sciatica? Common Signs

Sciatica has a distinct signature. If several of these sound familiar, it’s time to get evaluated:

  • Pain radiating from lower back into buttock & leg
  • Burning, electric or shooting leg pain
  • Numbness or tingling down one leg
  • Pain worse when sitting or coughing
  • Weakness in the leg or foot
  • Pain on one side (typical)
  • Trouble standing up straight
  • Relief when walking or lying down

Sciatica Questions, Answered

Does sciatica go away on its own?

Mild sciatica often improves within weeks with activity modification and conservative care. Pain that persists past 4–6 weeks, keeps returning, or comes with numbness or weakness deserves a specialist evaluation.

Do I need surgery for sciatica?

Usually not. Most patients improve with a combination of targeted injections, therapy and time. Surgery is reserved for severe or progressive cases — and our physicians will tell you honestly if you’re one of them.

How fast can an epidural injection help?

Many patients feel meaningful relief within a few days of an epidural steroid injection as the inflammation around the nerve settles. Relief duration varies by patient and cause.

Do I need a referral or an MRI first?

No referral is needed. If imaging is required, your physician will order it — and if you already have an MRI, bring it to your first visit.

Which clinic should I choose?

Whichever is closest: Kearny Mesa (Ruffin Rd), Rancho Bernardo, Chula Vista or La Mesa. Procedures are performed at our Comprehensive Pain ASC in the Ruffin Road building.
